Task 7

I always feel sad while talking about my dream in the future with my papa. My dream is I wish I could study film research or theory after I graduate from FJU. Papa said it might be very tough to live if I choose film making, film reviewing or something related to film realm as my career in the future. I thought how come I haven't got my dream start and have been told that I should never think about it. The reason why Papa wants me to stay away from the film realm is I would face plenty of burdens and trials that I will never get over. For instance, I prefer controlling everything if I have to deal with a work related to my interest, namely film stuff; thus, I will be pretty hard to collaborate with the crew and my producer or the film studio. I will not listen to what my boss asks me how to do, focusing on the part I want to emphasize and that the company doesn't think it'll be worth it and earn money from audience. Afterward, I might be ignored in this realm because I am hard to co-operate. Moreover, it is really common that lots of directors in Taiwan beg and borrow huge money from their friends and relatives to film a movie. Yet, Papa thinks I will never bend my head to do such thing and then going to the dead end. I told Papa that being a director is not the only way to enter the film realm. Perhaps I could be a movie reviewer or a film researcher; however, Papa still has his own opinion to reject me to touch it. He means there will be too many difficulties to deal with if I insist on entering this realm. I couldn't understand that why our elders consider that we juniors in Strawberry Generation nowadays are unable to conquer difficulties, and yet they also don't let us go the way to the trials, controlling our own futures. That is, they blame that we are as feeble as strawberry; nevertheless, they won't give us a chance to strengthen our capacity and endurance. So you see how pathetic we are?

The Reflection of Fatal Attraction

Fatal Attraction (1987) is not quite called a very classic thriller, but it certainly frightened large numbers of people in 1987. This movie describes that a man, a New York attorney, has a tryst with a seductive woman when his wife is away; later, the man ignores the affair, thinking it is just a mistake and it is over. However, the woman won’t just let it go, and she wants him to pay for their affair, destroying his family to keep him. Being a first successful film putting the crisis of the extramarital relation on the silver screen, it presents the sex abuse, the collapse of the traditional American family, and other societal issues in 1980s. Even though there are plenty of similar genres of film popping up after it, Fatal Attraction is only one which can give the spectators such real and drastic trepidation.
Adrian Lyne, the director, is interested in the subject of abnormal relationship between man and woman, from the instant love in 9 & 1/2 (1968), the trial of a true love in Indecent Proposal (1993), the forbidden romance with minor in Lolita (1997), to the adulterous fling in Unfaithful (2002). Even if he is fond of using such banned love and obscene image to crash the audience’s ethical concepts, portraying the meanings from films are not as risqué as the faces are, including Fatal Attraction.
There are barefaced sex scenes and perverted affair plot in Fatal Attraction, but the movie spends more time on illustrating the painful sacrifice after the carnal fling to warn the married playboys in the world. The film specifically shows a man who betrays the marriage may get a serious result, giving a lesson to people living in the tone of rotten society and in the crumbled marriage system, reminding us do not over swell our sexual desire; otherwise, it will kill our family and the fundamental mortality.
The writer of the play and the director are so delicate to present the every detailed point in the whole affair from the beginning to the end. The story begins with a romantic encounter and a poignant passion; then their biases to relationship between them appear. The man wants to quit the disloyal behavior, and on the other hand the woman is not willing to end their relation, so it turns into a nonstop cheating and a mean annoying. This relationship is starting to hurt the man’s family; therefore the man tries to negotiate with the woman, even confessing to his wife, but the woman never lets it go… The meticulous plots are very nifty, making the film so close to the audience’s mental idea. Besides, the deep portraying of the relationship between characters also helps the film to expand the issue of the extramarital relation, letting us feel the hurt from the affair to every main character.
Adrian Lyne incubates a panic atmosphere in the final part of Fatal Attraction, especially the acting of Glenn Close playing the bunny boiler in so different conditions when attractive in the first part and hysterical in final. Yet, it also becomes controversial because the impact of complex moral issue suddenly turns into a straightforward thriller genre. It is a little bit irresponsible.
The way by exaggerating the woman’s harassing behaviors in the movie seems to help the man to get out of his responsibility for this affair, so the film exudes the smell of chauvinistic perspective. In fact, there was a primary version of ending which was more controversial, and in the advance screening the spectators were dissatisfied with it; the director gives way because of the conservative taste of the mainstream in 1980s, changing and re-shooting the ending. It shows that most people want to see the intruder of a marriage is destroyed rather than she destroys the family. Thus, Fatal Attraction reflects not only the terrified moral issue in the story but the hidebound mindset in real society as well.

Task 6

Mistake is treated as a kind of errors or faults owing to someone judge defectively with carelessness or incorrect knowledge. It is easy to look at our own mistakes, but the problem is how to make others treat our mistakes. That is, what we are afraid of confessing is, after admitting we are wrong, do people forgive us? Would they connect the mistakes we made with our abilities and reputations forever? It's always hard to admit our own mistakes in public. Sometimes, the mistakes we have made are obviously recognized on our own in our minds; yet, we seldom tell others that we should be blame because of the mistakes. Therefore, it could be a struggle that whether we are supposed to hide it or to admit it or not.

Task 5

In fact, I am not fond of taking an assignment with group mates, not to mention collaborating with others in such Generation Multiple Perspective. First of all, if the group mates are my friends, then the conflict of ideas of ours may cause destruction among our relationship. And if they are just acquaintances of mine, it'll be hard to me to present my own opinions and viewpoint. Moreover, if we have to make a decision of the topic of a presentation, it'll be a chaos that everyone speaks out self comment, insisting on it. As a result, individual assignments make students not merely more efficient but more elaborate as well.

Task 4

There are so many different kinds of materials when students study nowadays. However, I am sort of traditional and conventional; thus, even though we could recommend students how to use networked instruments, still making these students tend to depend on the original one, namely paper materials. In my opinion and my experience, using traditional paper materials during studying seems much easier to concentrate, not to mention making students take a networked course. I believe it would be like a chaos if the networked courses get really popular, because I could not trust that students might be willing to be absorbed in the networked course. Moreover, it seems that networked students are simply to get tired and distracted, at least to me. Taking a course on internet makes me feel everything is unreal, and after that I must be dizzy and exhausted. In addition, I don’t think it is necessary to make the networked learning take place of traditional one if the distance is not a problem. Therefore, perhaps the networked course could be of some help to the students who have the distance problem; yet, the conventional classes should still keep going.

Task 3

The fact is I barely know about Britney Spears on TV or other media, so that I don’t know if her change is believable. She has already been a star since she was a little child in Disney Company. She was sweet, smart and charming. It seemed that her reputation was pretty positive and healthy. Yet, after the affair that she dated Justin Timberlake, she began to be a trouble maker on TV. I think she started being famous and well-known childhood, and she must be lost in her life growing up in such flashy sphere.

Task 2

Sometimes, we might get angry with what others did to us, losing our minds. There is no chance calming down during madness. Being outrageous or insane means the logical and reasonable behaviors do not get chance to show up. We always use our first-person point of view to see the world around us; therefore, we seldom rethink about things from some new angel. We might be blind when being unable and unwilling to perceive and understand. Yet, being irrational is extremely selfish and dangerous because it would damage the next circumstances and hurt people around us. Being mad not merely makes us not able to carry on but reveals our weakness to people as well. When being mad, we cannot control our rational sense and thus sometimes it is easy to have opponent get opportunities to assault us. As a result, keeping rational and calming down, especially when we are supposed to be mad, help us to avoid to the damage.
Moreover, using other’s angel to rethink about things is a way to respect people. It presents that we own macroscopically open minds to accept and appreciate different opinions even though they might be opposite to us. Even though rethinking about things with a different logic sometimes is pretty hard, we still have to try harder; otherwise, we would lack tolerance, breadth of view and sympathy. For instance, once my father told me his feelings of 海角七號. He thought that this film was full of strength such as strong script, reasonable plots, remarkable strategies, and appropriate characters. In his opinion, each plot in this movie connected each other, telling the audience the details between each plot and each character logically and rationally. It showed how delicate the script was designed and how diligent the director was. Nevertheless, I totally didn’t agree with my father. My dad often gets lots of wonderful and clever ideas after watching movies, teaching me how to appreciate and analyze a film as I was a child. Yet, this time I couldn’t stand his side. I thought he lacked the experience of watching movies, especially Taiwanese art film directed by 侯孝賢 or 蔡明亮. He liked to see films by 邵氏. Besides, he didn’t study film theories so that he didn’t know that even though the script takes a seriously significant role in a film, a movie is still needed to be designed and displayed by the director. Thus, the director is the main role as an author in a film, so that if there is only a strong and delicate script but the director doesn’t know how to deal with it, the film would be lousy. In my perspective, 魏德盛 designed this script very well; however, in 海角七號, there are too much detailed plots that it seems that they couldn’t improve or promote the quality of it. Such detailed script is sometimes very risky if the director doesn’t know how to present it in a film. He might make the film filled with nonessential parts in his movie and then the main theme would be a blur. I thought 魏德盛 wanted to display the characters and their background information too much. There is no need to explain every detailed reason why a character has to act in this way or do that thing, etc. As we can see in 蔡明亮’s works, he wouldn’t explain too many details about the hero. He just use the camera to display the characters’ behaviors and events, making us observe, discover, think, analyze and interpret them on our own. Such kinds of films can really cultivate and enlighten our ability of appreciating films, even the scenes we in reality. It is how brilliant films teach us. However, the audience, especially in Taiwan, are educated to take highly of the detailed plots and script; otherwise, the film they think it doesn’t explain clearly is lame. Some audiences have some stereotypes that if a director who cannot design a film certainly, he or she might be limited. Yet the truth is a good piece of art work should give its audience a wide imagination which might be ambiguous and multi-meaningful by the filmmaker’s clever shooting style and the art of montage. It is not good enough merely with a delicate script. After I claimed my viewpoint, my father thought that I didn’t have an open mind to accept his opinion and to listen to his meanings clearly. It might make people think that it is hard to communicate and to share thoughts with me. I felt my dad was ridiculous at that time, and I believed that he totally understood nothing about films. However, after I calmed down, rethinking perhaps I did really do something wrong, trying to value it, and agree with it from the different outlook. It was a good lesson I have learned from my father. Sometimes, the more expert we get in our sphere, the harder we are willing to take others’ opinions. And in this way, we would never learn anything various from the outside, being stuck in our situation, and couldn’t move on anymore. Thus, rethinking about things from a new angel is really important to us.

Task 1

Everyone gets his or her own value. Some people just don’t know that , because we are supposed to find out what the most important goal that deserve to make us achieve in our whole lives. Take me for example. I am hungry for getting any opportunity related to films to become my basic step in society. Therefore, I have to develop my own abilities of English and knowledge of philosophy for future; they may promote my chance if I enter the film sphere. In this way, the courses in English department and philosophy department are meaningful and significant to me right now. And if someone laughs at me for never skipping classes, I would say to him or her that these classes are helping me to make my future succeed. Perhaps the courses are meaningless to some because these are not related to what they get to do in the future. What they can do is just pass the course, get the credits and then graduate without a hitch. I won’t get angry with such rude question if someone asks, because everyone holds different values and have various dreams. People should not use heir own values to judge others’, not to mention that using our own principles to estimate others’. It’s acceptable to listen to what people tell you but believing it is in another situation. We have our own capacity to determine what people say is right or wrong. Even though what they say is right, is it appropriated to our purpose or our occasion. Working as a part-time waiter in a fancy restaurant and getting a lot of money are not wrong, and perhaps some could learn many lessons in this experience. Those are what they are eager for is not the purpose we are chasing. Thus, it is not about believing everything people tell you or not, it is about the various people hold. We are supposed to respect different kinds of opinions and perspectives; however, we could also see people from the viewpoints they have. An idea might develop one’s sense of value, and a value may affect one’s belief and viewpoint; finally, all of them would cultivate his or her mind and character and lead him or her to success or failure. What kind of success is so-called absolute success? And what is the real failure? Again different kinds of values and thoughts may have different kinds of outlooks and answers. Hence, we don’t have to judge other’s viewpoints, and yet we can predict their futures and observe their experiences from them.
